He is helping the police find out what happened to the Bishop of Oxford. Gifted is about fifteen year old Frank Sampson who is a forensic sorcerer which is a magician who helps the detectives solve crimes. Gifted is an intense and compelling read with a deliciously unexpected plot twist, and the book is worth reading for the Percy Jackson level of sass in Frank, who kept me laughing page after page. There is depth to be had in these characters. You want to understand Frank and his motives, Marvo and her thoughts. When is this book set?! However it is very clear that Hounam is a gifted (pun 100% intended) novelist who has a vivid imagination and his books have potential to swell cults the size of the Mortal Instruments fandom. Another thing that added to my confusion was the timing. It was't until halfway through I really knew what a "nekker" was! The main feeling I had when reading this book was confusion I felt I wasn't really able to keep track of the characters or plot, which is expected when reading a 'who dunnit' but not in this capacity. I wish the author had pulled the reader in a little more slowly, not just introducing us to "tatties" and such without much background information. However the descriptive scenes are rich and powerful, so you might not understand the significance of the setting, but you can sure imagine it. I found myself many times having to reread pages because I had no idea where the characters were, or why they were there. It realistically represents the mind frame of a teenager, making the book relatable to its young adult audience, but often makes it difficult to make sense of settings and plot. The confused narrative of the main character, Frank Sampson, is a blessing and a curse. Hounam has developed this world intricately and thoroughly, introducing the reader to "nekkers" and "tatties" and "Ghosts", to name a few. This book has little elements of everything mystery, humour, heavy topics, with a dash of sorcery. A diverse story suitable for lovers of Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments and screen adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. Gifted pulls you in right from the start. You may be interested in trying A Dangerous Magic by Donald Hounam if you like Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter Chonicles. There's so much further the novel could go and so much more that the author could explore. Overall, this novel has several good things going for it, but it didn't live up to my expectations. Partly that may be because the story jumps around so much, possibly in response to the type of kid Frank actually is. I didn't really care very much about anyone at all let alone our leading fifteen year old. While I liked being thrown right into the world of the characters, and some of the background, I had a difficult time connecting to the characters. In the end, though, I have it admit, it was quite underwhelming in comparison to what I was hoping for. When I discovered this novel on NetGalley, I thought it sounded so promising - just the kind of urban fantasy I needed in my life. If Frank wants to solve the mystery behind the murder, he's going to have to do some very dangerous magic. He's pulled into a murder investigation when a bishop gets beheaded. I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.įrank is a forensic sorcerer with powerful gifts.

Mephistopheles appears and declares the contract is complete, offering to take back the curse of the Ghost Rider. Keeping his own body in shadow, he transforms again and uses his Penance Stare to render Blackheart catatonic by burning all the corrupt souls within him. Johnny shoots Blackheart with the gun, holding it in the shadows to allow him to enhance it with his power. Using the contract to absorb the thousand souls, Blackheart attempts to finish Johnny off, but is distracted when Roxanne uses Johnny's discarded shotgun to separate them. He transforms into the Ghost Rider to subdue Blackheart, but is rendered powerless at sunrise. Slade then leads Johnny to San Venganza and gives him a lever-action shotgun before bidding farewell and apparently having finally shaken off the curse, fades into dust as he rides away.Īfter killing the water angel Wallow, Johnny gives Blackheart the contract. The Caretaker then transforms with Blaze, revealing that the Caretaker was actually Carter Slade. The Caretaker reveals that it is hidden inside a spade, telling Johnny that he is more powerful than his predecessors because he sold his soul for love rather than greed, before giving the contract. Johnny returns to the Caretaker, demanding the contract to save Roxanne. Blackheart then orders Johnny to retrieve the contract and bring it to him in San Venganza. Johnny tries to use the Penance Stare on Blackheart, but it proves ineffective as Blackheart has no soul. At home, Johnny discovers that Blackheart has killed his friend Mack and taken Roxanne hostage, intending to kill her if Johnny does not deliver the contract. He returns to the Caretaker, who tells him of his predecessor Carter Slade, a Texas Ranger who hid the contract of San Venganza. After brief imprisonment for murders Blackheart committed, Johnny kills the air angel Abigor and escapes from the police. Unconvinced, she walks away in disbelief. Roxanne comes to visit before leaving town, and Johnny reveals himself as the Devil's bounty hunter. At home, Johnny tries to control his firepower. Johnny leaves to find Roxanne, who is reporting the previous night's events on the news. He assures Johnny that what happened was real and will happen again, especially at night, when he is near an evil soul. The next day, he meets a man called the Caretaker, who knows about the Ghost Rider's history. He then uses the Penance Stare, a power that causes mortals to feel all the pain they have caused others, searing their soul, on a street thug. Johnny transforms into the Ghost Rider, his flesh burning off his skeleton, and kills the earth angel Gressil. Mephistopheles makes Johnny the new Ghost Rider and offers to return his soul if he defeats Blackheart. He convinces her to attend a dinner date. He runs into his former sweetheart Roxanne Simpson, now a news reporter, whom he abandoned after his father's death. In the present, Johnny has become a famous motorcycle stuntman. Mephistopheles' son Blackheart comes to Earth and seeks aid from the Hidden (three fallen angels bonded with the elements of air, earth, and water) to find the lost contract of San Venganza. Johnny accuses Mephistopheles of causing his father's death, but Mephistopheles considers his side of the contract fulfilled and promises to see Johnny again. The next morning, Johnny awakens to discover the cancer cured, but his father dies later that same day from burns sustained in a stunt accident. In 1986, Mephistopheles reaches out to 17-year-old Johnny Blaze, offering to cure his father's cancer in exchange for Johnny's soul. Seeing that the agreement would give Mephistopheles the power to bring hell on Earth, the Rider refuses and escapes with it. The demon Mephistopheles sends his bounty hunter of the damned, the Ghost Rider, to retrieve the contract of San Venganza for control of a thousand corrupt souls. A sequel, titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, was released on February 17, 2012, with Cage reprising his role. Ghost Rider was released on DVD, Blu-ray and UMD on June 12, 2007. A per-install metric, with no defined upper bound, that continually costs money, is a financial black hole, ruinous to smaller devs, and can only be mitigated with terrible monetization tactics (which also might turn customers off of your premium game.)Īlso remember that Unity chose to run at a ridiculous, currently multi-billion dollar cumulative loss, for years. This is a complete misrepresentation of the dominant sentiment - which is that a rev share would have been fine, thank you, because devs can actually plan around that. The only thing I can think of is either a) dumb pride that means they don't want to copy Epic, or more likely b) to make money they would need to have a much lower revenue threshold than Epic because they are more indie-focused, and having the same % model would make them directly comparable and strictly worse, which will make them look bad.Ĭlick to shrink. But Epic does this because they have Fortnite money, and so are basically giving it away to the 90% to make money only on the 10% whales.Īs to why Unity doesn't also propose this, I don't know, and I doubt they'll ever say, because corpos never explain this stuff. There is not a point where Adobe is like "your wedding photography business made more than £200,000 this year so we are going to take a % of your revenue". If you run a photography business you probably use Lightroom/Photoshop, and pay £n/user/month for access to that software. Unity is currently (as in prior to this stupid change) a seats-cost per user per month-model, which is what most professional software uses. The push to ad rev, the focus on installs over sales (due to ad rev/microtransactions), the complete ignorance of piracy on PC, console network traffic lockdown, etc.it kinda makes more sense when you see it through the lens of constantly updated and online mobile games that rely on ad rev and microtransactions (as piracy matters none there).Ĭlick to shrink. This is Epic's model, it is free until a certain threshold then it's x%. Everything to do with console/PC is just hand waved because it never really mattered to Unity. (edit- i'm referring to previously released games on older versions of Unity here) The console networks are locked down pretty hard, so unless there was some crazy backdoor that Unity could turn on at a moment's notice (which I would say isn't realistic), they are looking to developers to just use the 1 download = one install type of thing that you would see on the mobile game platforms.Ī lot of this move makes way more sense when you realize that it was made for a mobile game development audience. People trying the craft often pick apart microwaves or car batteries to remove the power supply, which is then connected through jumper cables to nails attached to a piece of wood slathered with a conductive solution of baking soda and water. Yet the aesthetically pleasing look of veins spreading across a piece of wood can come at a high cost - and in dozens of cases have turned fatal. On TikTok, #fractalburning and similar hashtags have garnered millions of views. Hundreds of how-to videos exist on the Internet. The results have turned fractal wood burning into a social media phenomenon. The intricate designs - often seen in the scars of people who’ve been struck by lightning - resemble tree branches, lightning bolts or ferns. The process creates what is referred to as Lichtenberg figures, a pattern discovered in 1777 by German physicist Georg Lichtenberg while he conducted static electricity experiments. Fractal wood burning pairs high-voltage electricity and a chemical solution to etch intricate designs into slabs of wood. “Foul play has been ruled out and the deaths are found to be accidental in nature and believed to be caused by electrocution from fractal wood burning,” he said. Chief Deputy Chad Billeb confirmed the findings during a Thursday news conference. Then, pathologists conducting the couple’s autopsies proposed a theory that changed the course of the investigation: that Rodriguez and Carolfi had died after electrocution from fractal wood burning. Firefighters suspected foul play, and Marathon County sheriff’s deputies started looking for clues to solve what they thought was a homicide case. But once the blaze was extinguished, officers found two bodies in the garage - those of Tanya Rodriguez, 44, and James Carolfi, 52.
